Biography | Professor Edward Melhuish is a developmental psychologist who is currently Excecutive Director of the National Evaluation of Sure Start. His research interests are in studying environmental influences on social, cognitive and communicative development, often using longitudinal studies. Interests include pre-school care and education; parenting; and the linking of research on child development with social policy. Previous research influenced the 1989 Children Act. | |||

Biography | Louise Quinn has managed and co-ordinated the Effective Pre-school Provision Northern Ireland (EPPNI) project since 1999 when she started in Stranmillis University College. The project, initially funded by the DE, DHSSPS and SSG (1998-2004), is a longitudinal study investigating the effectiveness of pre-school provision on children’s later development, achievement and progress.
Louise has a background in health and psychology. She has worked on a number of research projects including children’s drawings, classroom assistants job satisfaction, healthy eating in primary school, student stress in higher education, school experience makes a difference and the use of ICT to teach maths at KS1 and 2. Louise is also currently researching the development of children’s social identity. |
